Critical adjustments are set to disrupt the gaming experience for fans of Crysis 3, Dante's Inferno, and Dead Space 2. EA announced plans to decommission online features for these beloved games, including leaderboards and some achievements. This will soon affect players who still use these features regularly.
According to Electronic Arts, the decision was fuelled by dwindling numbers of active players. They acknowledge their loyal community and reveal that the servers supporting online services for these games more than maintained their due lifespan. Some of these games are a decade old, indicating a rare instance of online longevity in the gaming world.
The sunsetting process started in mid-April 2021, with Crysis 2 seeing the first departure from online services. Notably, the forthcoming retrenchment won't affect single-player campaigns, giving lovers of solo play the chance to continue enjoying these masterpieces. However, multiplayer modes are now bound to be a thing of the past.
Players are advised to wrap up their online priorities and walk away from the impending extinction. Achievement hunters, particularly, have less than a month to collect their elusive prizes before the EA turns off the online services.
This move serves as a sharp reminder of the impermanent nature of online gaming world. While games may live on through their narratives and characters, online services are another beast entirely, subject to the whims of player involvement and technological advances. Still, the upcoming changes do not spell the end of these beloved franchises. With rumours circulating about the potential reformation of these classics, fans can keep their hope alive.
