We're constantly looking for the next big leap in gaming technology. It seems Microsoft had a bold idea for their future game console, according to recently leaked court documents from the FTC v. Microsoft case. The envisioned console would amalgamate the power of local processing with the limitless potential of the cloud for gaming experiences, surpassing current hardware limitations.
Inside the leaked documents, we found an interesting concept: a hybrid cloud game console powered by either an AMD Zen 6 or ARM CPU, along with a Navi 5 semi-custom GPU. The cherry on top would be the integration with a cloud gaming platform, delivering the promise of gaming performance exceeding what standalone client hardware can offer. They intended to actualize this plan with their next-gen console slated for a late 2028 release.
There was also an indicative timeline graph showing the journey of the console's development. It starts with a crucial technical decision in late 2022 about whether to use an ARM-based processor or remain with the x86 architecture. Interestingly, the process of silicon planning and research can begin as early as six years before final product validation. Initial and final development kits are expected in late 2026 and 2027, respectively, followed by mass assembly and the final product release in 2028.
In line with this tech leap, the integration of Artificial Intelligence would also play a substantial role. The leaked documents mention a myriad of AI and machine learning use cases such as super-resolution, matchmaking, AI game testing, procedural content generation, personalization services, and so on. These AI integrations would provide a more immersive gaming experience and better in-game management.
Of course, currently, this is all in the realm of speculation. Xbox boss Phil Spencer himself has downplayed the leaked documents, stating that their plans have changed significantly since their conception. He reassured them that when the time came, they would share their actual plans with their players. But even if the final product is not exactly as envisaged, the leaks provide an intriguing glimpse into the concept and development stages. Whether AMD-based hardware, sophisticated AI integration, or cloud-local blend becomes the norm, it’s all in the game of wait and see. The only sure thing is that we can't wait to see what the future holds for the gaming world.
